Blue Vs White Ram Slots

Blue Vs White Ram Slots Rating: 3,6/5 6827 votes

Load all black slots first and then load the white slots. Load the memory modules in order of size, starting with the largest module and finishing with the smallest module. For a single processor configuration, the DIMMs should be loaded first in the black sockets and then in the white sockets. Lets say you have two blue slots and two red slots, and you have two RAM sticks, but both of them in, say, the red ones. Thats basically to indicate dual channel slots. For more details refer to your motherboard manual. They will explain where and how to install your RAM. Some boards don't like it when they are not installed in a specific slot.

First, I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere; I searched the forums and didn't find this particular question.
This is my first build, so I have the following background info for my question (at the bottom):
I have 3x4GB sticks of RAM (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9) from my previous triple-channel mobo. The Maximus Vii hero user guide
indicates that the RAM I have is compatible with the board. The guide says that the 'DIMM Socket Support (Optional)' supports '2',
but not '4'. Which refers to the following:
'(2) Supports two (2) modules inserted into either the red slots or the black slots as one pair of Dual-Channel memory
configuration.'
Question: This might be a newb question, but can I use all three sticks? Configure two of the DIMMs for Dual-Channel, and then
simply add the last stick in the appropriate open slot? Doing so won't cause the Maximus not to POST or somehow damage the
board?
Thanks folks.
  • The black slots would be one bank, and the blue slots would be the other bank. Each bank of RAM must have the same size and speed of RAM in both slots in a dual-channel configuration. If the RAM modules are not identical, the system either will default to single channel or it won't work at all, depending on the motherboard and the memory.
  • Vivo S1 smartphone comes with a starting price of Rs 17,990. With the launch of Vivo S1, Vivo looks to deepen both its online and offline presence.
